


Exombourgo Rock and Castle
The Rock of Exombourgo stands 640 meters high, dominating over the northern section of the island. It's a trademark for Tinos Island.
The first traces of civilization go back to the Copper Age, when the massive wall of Exombourgo is built. The Rock is inhabited during the Geometrical Age and the Dark Ages.
The Sanctuary of the Great Goddess and Daughter is located sometime during the Archaic Ages. During the time of peace and prosperity, the villagers left the Rock and inhabited the ports and coastal line of the Island.
This was till the Byzantine Era, when the pirates started looting the islands. The rock and its wall was the safest place for the villagers so they moved back.
That castle endured a series of invasions: Turks, Saracens, Westerns. It was during the years 1715-1742 that the last of the invasions took place and the castle was but destroyed.
The Saint Helen's fort lasted over five hundred years, providing the villagers with safety and security.
