Ancient Temple of Poseidon
In Kionia, 3km from the city are the remains of the ancient temple of Apollo and Amfitriti. The exact date of its construction stays unknown.
But from the historic sources we know that Poseidon's worship was spread in Aegean Sea and that Tinos was a significant religious center, equal to that of Dilos.
The island flourished as Poseidon's devotional center during the 5th
century BC while in the 3rd century the temple was reconstructed. The
expansion of its sanctorum established the worship of Amfitriti,
Poseidon's wife.
Poseidon apart from the god of sea was also a doctor. While Amfitriti
as the protector of woman's fertility was a therapist for women'
diseases. The worship of these two gods lasted until Roman times.
The excavations brought into light pieces of the temples' ground, the
guest room's bathroom and of a platform dated from the hellenistic
times. Among these findings distinguish the sculptural pieces and the
decorative parts that show the glory of the construction.
