The Veggera (Visit)
Veggeres were one of the old, traditional customs that used to strengthen the relationships among the villagers.
At night-time, one family would visit another family in the same village. The family, would set off from their house, led by a small child carrying the oil-lamp to light their way, to visit another family in the village.
The children would play in the front yard or balcony, and the grown-ups would discuss the matters of their everyday lives, such as the problems in the village, gossip or the upcoming harvest or holidays.
The lady of the house would offer wine or raki and dried figs or loukoumia, or an omelette with local sausage.
Grandparents lived in the same house as the rest of the family and it would be a great opportunity for the children to listen to some fairytales or stories from their grandma, while the grown-ups would discuss and enjoy their drinks.
The veggera would come to an end late at night, when the families would say goodnight and part, heading back to their houses.
