Georgios Vitalis (sculptor)
He was born in 1838, at Isternia.
His father was an architect in Smyrna, but he prefers to try marble sculpture. At first he is an apprentice at the workshop of the Fitali brothers. Later he studies at the Technical University of Athens and after that, on a scholarship from Queen Amalia, he attends the School of Fine Arts in Munich.
He works as a sculptor in Hermoupolis and Alexandria, while he receives many prizes and gold medals for his work both in Greece and abroad. He takes on orders mainly for tombs; he constructs the Cathedrals of Saint John and of Saint Nicholas in Syros and creates many statues of famous heroes of the revolution of 1821.
Georgios Vitalis draws his last breath in 1901 in Alexandria. Among his most important works are: Byron in Missolonghi, Averov etc.
