Antonios Sohos (sculptor)
He was born at Isternia, in 1888, in a family with tradition in marble sculpture.
So, he begins his studies at his father's marble workshop, in Patras, continues at the School of Fine Arts in Athens and completes his studies, on a scholarship, in Paris. There, in 1921, he puts on his first exhibition, for which he receives very good reviews. Afterwards he studies in Munich and returns to Greece. He excels as a teacher of sculpture and plastic arts at the National Metsovion Technical University of Athens and he goes on to become a great academic. He holds his chair until 1959.He creates many works. A characteristic example is the Athenian Woman. His sculptures are found in several public spaces in Greece , the former Yugoslav Republic, and also in Egypt, Cyprus, Bulgaria, etc. Antonios Sochos is considered one of the most characteristic representatives of the generation of the 1930s, which renounces the tendencies prevailing up to that moment in Modern Greek sculpture which were none other classicism, idealism and realistic representation. After 1949, he takes up wood carving almost exclusively, creating mainly forms with sharp and strictly defined levels. He passes away in 1975.
